An image of a young man crafting artefacts by hand expresses a spiritual dimension: being creative brings together both intuitive and intellectual skills; and with his being young we understand that although he will have learned much about life already he still has a long part of the journey ahead. But young people are so trusting in the process of living.

A Kind Of Spiritual Guidance

This figure was drawn in response to an earlier project about loss of identity. I first entitled it 'A Frame of Reference', as in her work this person provides this for people who have temporarily lost their way. We all have a need to make sense of our world and of our journey through it. In art and in stories through the ages help has often been in the form of angels; they could be seen as one way to formalise our spiritual needs. My "angel" has no wings.

The best view of all is where the land meets the sky.

The act of drawing underpins so much; drawing is a way of thinking, a visual diary, poetry, and a link with the function of consciousness - our attempt at understanding. A chance to see beauty, and to be creative and balance the intuitive and the intellectual.

I am seeking to convey a sense of time and distance, of human life as a brief moment in the context of a universe where time and space appear infinite. Somewhere in the spaces between our transient lives and the boundless universe we inhabit, lies the spiritual which creates continuity and connection.

Church windows have always been a spiritual image for me and in sunlight and moonlight have always been beautiful.

My painting is an impression of a window I found in a church in France. This is a colourful impression and is heightened perhaps as a sense of simplicity heightens our perception.
